Haberdasher’s Notes

This classic Mr Sid double-breasted suit stands as a masterclass in vintage tailoring and traditional American style. The iconic 4/1 button stance and sweeping peak lapels reflect an era when menswear was built with unapologetic character and structural presence. Far from a rigid artifact, this suit brings a quiet confidence to a modern wardrobe when styled thoughtfully.

For a sharp, business-forward impression, pair the charcoal chalk stripe fabric with a crisp white oxford cloth button-down shirt, a dark silk repp tie, and polished black oxfords. Alternatively, step into the contemporary "high-low" mix by wearing the jacket unbuttoned over a fine-gauge merino wool knit or a premium cream tee, anchoring the outfit with the high-rise trousers. The generous classic fit profile runs true to a vintage 43L, offering a fuller traditional silhouette with an easy, fluid drape. With an unhemmed pant leg ready for your personal tailor, this unworn piece represents sustainable fashion at its most pristine and authoritative level.

Buyer's Guide & Care

  • All items are graded using a consistent internal standard based on wear, fabric integrity, and overall presentation. Full definitions can be found in our Product Condition and Cleanliness Guide. Any flaws will be shown in pictures as well as explained in the condition block on the product page. If any questions, please email us at beardedyankee@beardedyankee.com.

  • How do I ensure this suit will fit me?

Trust the tape, not the tag.

Sizing varies wildly depending on the brand and era. A 1980s "42R" fits differently than a modern one.

    The Golden Rule:

    1. The Jacket: Lay your best-fitting suit jacket flat and measure the Chest (Pit-to-Pit) and Shoulders.
    2.  The Trousers: Lay your best-fitting dress trousers flat and measure the waistband edge-to-edge.
    3.  Compare: Match those numbers to our listing.

    Need a tutorial?
Visit our Measuring Guide to see exactly how we measure (including our specific method for Sleeve Length and Front Length ) so you can measure your own suit the same way.

For additional sizing and fit advice, read our How to Measure for a Secondhand Suit Fit guide which explains how to compare measurements, understand suit basic sizing, terminology, and evaluate fit before purchasing.

  • Almost certainly. A suit is sold as a "framework" meant to be adjusted to your body.

    What to Expect:

Most pre-owned suits will require minor tweaks—usually sleeve length, waist suppression, or trouser hem—to achieve a perfect fit.

    The "Outlet" Bonus

We list the "Sleeve Allowance" and "Trouser Allowance" (extra fabric inside the cuff/waist) so you know exactly how much room your tailor has to let them out.

  • We ship to preserve the structure. We use spacious boxes to ensure the shoulder pads and canvas chest pieces are not crushed during transit. We never stuff a tailored suit into a tight poly mailer.

    Upon Arrival:

Wool and natural fibers may relax during shipping. We recommend hanging the suit immediately to let the fibers breathe and shed any minor shipping creases.

  • As little as possible. Frequent chemical cleaning strips natural fibers of their oils, making them brittle and shiny.

    • Daily: Brush your suit with a natural horsehair brush after every wear to remove dust.

    • Rest: Never wear the same suit two days in a row. Wool needs 24 hours to "rest" and recover its shape.

    • Cleaning: Only dry clean if there is a visible stain.
